Steering changes for Badentyre

The motor is running fine, but the steering column needs a little bit of work.

That’s the summation of the talents of Gavin Smith Racing Stables sole contender, Badentyre, tonight at Addington as he looks to break maidens following a good start to his career.

The Real Desire three-year-old colt has had three raceday starts and turned in tidy performances in all three, including his last start effort for sixth at Ashburton when he appeared to not be too keen on taking the passing lane.

Gavin’s got no doubt he would have been right in the fight if he hadn’t been fighting his steering gear quite so badly.

“We’ve changed his steering set up and he’s been a lot better in work so hopefully we have it right,” Gavin said.

Starting from a tricky spot on the second line won’t help things in what is an even field but Gavin has made it a habit of his to get himself into all the right spots from behind the barrier strand.

“It’s not going to be easy from the draw but if we can get a nice run through from the second line and be close enough turning for home he’s good enough to figure.”

Allison Stokke will have the second start of her Woodend Beach holiday when she contests the first race on the card.

A tidy fourth last week would normally have put her right into contention but a small, but very handy, field of opposition and an outside barrier draw will mean she has to be driven for luck.

Gav’s one other drive tonight is Flyin Heather who finished fourth at Rangiora on Sunday.

The Phil Burrows trained mare is capable of winning a race like the one she faces tonight but will need luck with her opposition holding a lot of depth.

There’s a return trip to Addington on Sunday to close out the season and the stable has two runners engaged.

Melanie O’Hara, who was caught up in the fall in the last race at Rangiora, will return while Imola will be looking to improve on the good effort for third last weekend.
