Cautious approach the best approach

As far as he’s concerned there’s two ways Gavin Smith could approach tonight’s Canterbury Park Trotting Cup with Sunny Ruby.

But Gav’s thinking that the cautious approach might be the best option as he looks to build toward some bigger goals within the next month around the Canterbury region.

Out of sorts since her brilliant fresh up victory, Sunny Ruby gets a chance to bounce back to her best when she takes on an even field in the Group Three feature and off the back of a tidy fourth in Sunday’s DG Jones Banks Peninsula Trotting Cup she should be ready to rip into it.

“Sam (trainer Sam Smolenski) has been ironing out a few wee things with her ever since he night she got left parked and pulled,” Gavin said.

“And slowly, but surely, she is improving with each run which is encouraging.”

Wanting to build confidence and not end up back where they were is why Gavin is keen to take a steady approach on tonight’s feature as opposed to getting out and running.

“I’ve got no doubt she could lead if I wanted her too from the 10 metre handicap, but I think we are better off taking it easy and driving her for her speed.

“If we tried to run early we could run the risk of her getting fired up which isn’t ideal.

“She’s good enough to run over the top of them, especially if they trot along a bit and we are building toward the Dominion so as long as she’s making up ground I think we will be happy.”

Gavin has three of his own stable runners engaged tonight with Blade, Imola and All Settled Down all tackling Super Series Finals.

Blade looked back to his best with a good second last start and both Imola and All Settled Down have been very good over the past month.

“All three have got their chance on the way they are racing. Blade might have the toughest job in front of him but if everything falls into place it wouldn’t surprise me if any one of the three won.”

Gavin also has strong outside drives on Kotare Yael who is looking for three wins on end and also Living Legend - both of whom hail from the Robert Dunn stable.
