From Aussie to Addington

March 31, 2017

She’s come the long way to get there and Di’z Luck isn’t just there to make up the numbers in tonight’s Group Two $40,000 New Zealand Trotting Oaks at Addington.

The reigning two-year-old trotting filly of the year has been doing battle in Australia for the past month – a trip which netted some nice enough results, without a lot of luck falling her way either.

But Gavin couldn’t be happier with her since her return.

“She’s come back in great order from an Australian campaign that was devoid of luck,” he said.

Drawn on the front line tonight with some noted speedsters to either side, Gavin will have to weigh up his options carefully out of the gate, but can do so knowing that he has a horse good enough to be more than competitive.

“It’s a strong field, but she is up to most of them if she gets the right trip, I’ve got no doubt about it.

“But at this stage in her career she really does need that right trip I reckon.”

Di’z Luck will be joined at Addington tonight by All Settled Down who, in recent weeks, has been anything but as her name would suggest.

There’s a huge motor tucked away in there, but the manners are the big issue and Gavin is forever changing and tinkering with things in an effort to make her more tractable.

“We have changed a couple more things with her and the softer ground in the paddock seems to have helped her soundness.

“We are more hopeful than confident but the ability is definitely there if we catch her on the right foot.”

Gavin has picked up a tidy outside drive tonight in Gotta Go Ya Hu from the Robert Dunn stable, although an outside of the second row barrier draw will in no way help his chances.

The speedy pacer was an impressive winner last time, but does come up against two very smart three-year-olds in Whittaker and Let It Ride.
