One more run, at the annual Cup trials, the week before Cup Week will be all you’ll see of Gavin Smith Racing Stables star and Dominion Handicap favourite, Great Things Happen.

The big son of Love You has come through his Ashburton Trotters’ Flying Mile victory on Monday with flying colours and will now have his attention turned to not just one, but both of the features during the big week of harness racing at Addington.

“Initially I didn’t really consider the Free-For-All,” Gavin said.

“But the way he won on Monday, I think we sort of have to have a crack at it now.

“He won’t have too many issues with backing up I wouldn’t think.”

His 1:55.4 mile effort on Monday was dominant and will have installed a little fear into his rivals for the two Group One features, particularly with the blistering gate speed he showed on Monday.

“We had to make a bit of a statement out there and I think we did.

“He’s flying though, I’m really happy with him and he come through the run about as good as he could I think.

“He ate up that night and was going berserk in the paddock the next day so he’s really bright.”

Gavin could have raced again next Friday night at Addington, but has elected to use the Cup Trials as his final preparation for the following week.

“I think that one more run will tighten him up right to where I want him.

“It will just be a quiet run, but should be a big benefit for him ahead of those two races.”

A $3.60 favourite with bookmakers for the Dominion, all the talk is now around Great Things Happen - just reward for Gavin who has shown the patience of a saint with the horse during his career.

“We are starting to see the best of him now and I do believe that’s because we looked after him and let him find his own way.”

Meanwhile the stable will have a four-pronged attack on the two-day Kaikoura meeting this weekend.

Maiden pacer Pembrook’s Passion, who was very good when running second on debut, will line up on the first day looking to go one better while Miracle Rising, Red Moon Rising and Imola will all be in action at the traditional Monday meeting.

Miracle Rising, who finished a bold second to Musculus last time out, meets a wide open and even trotting event but his best form should take him close while the other pair will race for serious coin in the Sales Series Aged Pace.

Gavin will take the reins on Red Moon Rising due to owning a share in the gelding while Ricky May has been booked to take the drive on the enigmatic Imola.
